Paul Dunn, RN, MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner

Mr. Dunn will be working with us part time. He practices the full scope of family medicine from school-aged children to “seniors”. Mr. Dunn joined Chapel Hill Primary Care in January 2016. He has over 35 years of experience in health care. He served as an emergency dept nurse at Duke in the 1980s followed by 24 years at the UNC Department of Family Medicine where he served as a clinical associate professor. This was followed by 8 years at UNC Family Medicine at Hillsborough until this past summer (2015).

In the early 2000s he had the honor of working with educators of nurses and physicians in Yerevan, Armenia as part of a USAID project. In the 1970s he served 6 years in the US Air Force as a medic. He  keeps a “special place” in his heart for the health care of military veterans. He cherishes diversity of age, race and culture in his practice. In addition to English he speaks rudimentary Icelandic.

Professional Background
Mr. Dunn attended college at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh and his Master’s degree at UNC Chapel Hill. Although he has been in primary care for almost his whole career he specializes in diabetes care. He is a past chair of the Governor’s Taskforce of Patterns of Diabetes Care in NC. He has traveled throughout the state offering workshops on diabetes care and eye care. He is a past adjunct professor in the UNC Departments of Nursing and Pharmacy.

Philosophy
All his patient’s get his best. He wants to keep his patients educated about preventing illnesses and comforted and informed when and if disease happens. His own experience with cancer and his family experience with death from diabetes have always informed his practice. He keeps 30 minute visits ( a little longer if you are new). He’ll be working 12 hours a week.

Personal:
He lives in Hillsborough with his beautiful wife and has a son working in the furniture industry in Hickory NC.  He admits he loves the South and is not returning to live in Massachusetts any time soon.
